We have tried to capture all of the most common rules here to allow for fair play between both teams throughout the weekend. If any rule discrepancies come up please refer to the Golf Canada Rules of Golf.
For rules that are specific to the JBC Invitational that include handicapping for this years event, please refer to the official rules and clarification document.
Please refer to the listed diagram on how to appropriately take relief from a Yellow Staked area.
Please refer to the listed diagram on how to appropriately take relief from a Red Staked area.
We will be adopting a local rule for white stake / out of bounds play to be used across all matches at the JBC Invitational. If an area is not staked inside the course or on the exterior of the course, you are to consider this area as a white stake. The player has a few options regarding playing his proceeding ball. Please follow the below diagrams and descriptions for clarity.
If a players original tee shot comes to rest behind a white stake or is believed to have come to rest in a white staked or out of bounds area off the tee, the player has 2 options.
If the player believes they will locate their tee shot and upon driving up the fairway the ball is not located, Option #2 is the only option the player has at that point. You cannot return to the tee to play your 3rd shot. Provisional shots are allowed and encouraged to keep pace of play.
Option # 1: Playing a second ball from the teeing area The player may choose to re-tee the ball from the teeing area while taking a 1 stroke penalty (3-from-the-tee). A new ball must be identified to the other team (brand and number) and the decision to play another tee shot must be clearly stated to the other team. If the player chooses this option and the second tee shot comes to rest or is believed to have come to rest in a white staked or out of bounds area, they must move to option #2.
Option #2: Taking a drop in the designated drop area If a player chooses not to play another ball from the teeing area, they now have the option to take a drop anywhere between the imaginary triangle formed between, the teeing area, the point at which the ball crossed the white stake / out of bounds area, and the middle of the fairway. If the point where the ball entered out of bounds area does not reach the fairway, the middle of the fairway is to be ‘extended back’ to the point where the the ball crossed into the white stake area. (Anywhere in the red area on the diagram) If this option is taken, a 2 shot penalty will be issued. (When the ball is dropped your proceeding shot will be considered your 4th)
If the player chose option #1 and was forced to move to option #2 because their second tee shot also came to rest in a white staked area, a 2 stroke penalty will be issued on top of the 1 stroke penalty issued from option #1. The point at which your ball crossed the white stake that you will make your imaginary triangle, will be based upon your SECOND tee shot. (When your ball is dropped your next shot will be considered your 6th)
If a players original approach shot comes to rest behind a white stake or is believed to have come to rest in a white staked or out of bounds area, the player has 2 options.
If the player believes they will locate their approach shot and upon driving up the fairway the ball is not located, Option #2 is the only option the player has at that point. You cannot return to the location of your original approach to play another shot. Provisional shots are allowed and encouraged to keep pace of play.
Option # 1: Playing another ball from your original approach location The player may choose to play another ball from the original approach location while taking a 1 stroke penalty. A new ball must be identified to the other team (brand and number) and the decision to play another shot from that location must be clearly stated to the other team. If the player chooses this option and the second approach shot comes to rest or is believed to have come to rest in a white staked or out of bounds area, they must move to option #2.
Option #2: Taking a drop in the designated penalty area If a player chooses not to play another ball from the original approach location, they now have the option to take a drop anywhere inside the imaginary semi-circle created by using 1 club placed at the original entry point to the white stake or out of bounds area. If this option is taken, a 2 shot penalty will be taken. (Eg. #1 off the tee. #2 into a white staked area. A 2 stroke penalty is issued. Your next shot would be considered #5)
If the player chose option #1 and were forced to move to option #2 because their second shot from the approach location has also come to rest in a white staked area, a 2 stroke penalty will be assessed on top of the 1 stoke penalty from option #1. The point at which your ball crossed the white stake that you will make your imaginary semi-circle will be based upon you SECOND approach shot. (Eg. #1 off the tee. #2 into a white staked area. 1 stroke penalty is issued. #4 from original approach area into a white staked area. A 2 stroke penalty is issued and a drop is taken in the penalty area. Your next shot would be considered #7)
We will be playing in fall golf conditions and if there is leaves on the ground we have adopted a Gallery Rule that is to be monitored and agreed upon throughout all players within a group.
If is reasonably believed by both teams that a ball is to be in-play but is lost due to the amount of leaves, the team or player that has lost his ball and the opposing team, must agree on a location for a drop of a ball within one club length and a 1 stroke penalty is issued.
This may differ from group to group so please police yourselves.
We will adopt a Gallery Rule. If your ball comes to rest inside a divot, the player must identify that that they would like to take relief in an area no bigger than a scorecard and no closer to the hole, at their nearest point of relief. This must be agreed upon by all members of the group.
This may differ group to group so please police yourselves.
We will see what the course conditions are for our first round and update the group on if there is any changes to rules after the finish of the first round.
In match play, if a player plays the wrong ball, the player gets the general penalty (loss of hole)
In stroke play, if a player plays the wrong ball, the player gets the general penalty (two penalty strokes) and must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking proper relief (this would result in another 1 stoke penalty if the ball is deemed to be lost)
